Our Story
In 1999, the Lord placed a vision on Ernie Hautala’s heart: to create a ministry that would care for pastors and full-time Christian workers. Having served as both a missionary and a pastor, Ernie knew firsthand how vital it is for those in ministry to step away, find renewal in God’s Word, and receive encouragement from others who understand their journey.
In 2000, Shepherds Care hosted its very first retreat for pastors. Ernie went home to be with the Lord in November 2011, and his wife Claudia followed in June 2012. The Board of Directors remains committed to carrying on the work God began through Ernie, providing rest, refreshment, reflection, renewal, and redirection for pastors and full-time Christian workers.
Leadership
In May 2016, Bob Pycraft was appointed Executive Director. Bob and his wife, Bette, bring more than 50 years of ministry experience and now count it a great joy and privilege to continue this much-needed mission of serving God’s servants.
Retreats
Pastor Retreats: Held twice a year, in June and October. These retreats offer pastors and full-time Christian workers a much-needed opportunity to step away from daily responsibilities, rest in God’s presence, and be encouraged. All retreats are offered at no cost to the pastor and his wife.
Personal Retreats: Throughout the year, we also provide opportunities for pastors, ministry workers, and their wives to spend a few days in solitude with the Lord. These quiet retreats offer space for prayer, reflection, and renewal. If you or someone you know would benefit from a personal retreat, we invite you to reach out to us at Bobpy52@yahoo.com.
THE GOOD SHEPHERD
“I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” John 10:11
At Shepherds Care Ministries, our heart is to provide Rest, Refreshment, Reflection, Renewal, and Redirection for pastors, their families, and those connected to ministry life.
How We Serve
Pastors’ Retreats
Twice a year—in June and October—we host retreats at The Shack, a beautiful bed and breakfast near Fremont, Michigan. These retreats are offered at no cost to pastors and their spouses. From Monday evening through Friday morning, you’ll experience a true retreat: no schedules, no demands, just space to rest, reflect, and be renewed in the Lord.
Get-Away Opportunities
Through our growing network of cabins, cottages, apartments, and Christian camps, pastors and their families can step away for a few days up to a week. The only cost is bringing your own groceries. It’s a simple way to pause, rest, and recharge together.
Widows’ Retreats
We minister to women whose husbands were called home while serving in ministry. Overnight, their lives are turned upside down—their role and identity dramatically shift. Our retreats offer encouragement, support, and a safe place to walk through this difficult transition with others who understand.
Pulpit Supply
We’re available to speak on your behalf, so you can step away for rest knowing your congregation will be well cared for in your absence.
